How to test an update to a live app before you roll it out

ยท 1 min read

A bug in a new version reaches every user at once. A live app has existing users, saved data and old versions on their phones, and a fresh install on your own device shows none of that. This checklist covers what to test before you roll an update out.

Test the upgrade, not just the new build

Install the old store version first, create some data, then update to the new build. Many crashes only happen on this path, for example when a database migration meets old data.

Check saved data and login

Confirm that users stay signed in, that settings survive and that purchases are still recognized after the update.

Review new permissions and changed flows

A new permission prompt in the first minute loses users. Walk through sign-up, the main action and the purchase flow as someone who has never seen the app.

Cover devices you do not own

Small screens, older Android versions and large font settings break layouts that look fine on your phone. Ask other developers to walk through the same steps on their devices and report device and OS version with every finding.

Roll out in stages

Use a staged rollout in the Play Console or phased release on the App Store. Start with a small percentage and watch crashes before you widen it.

With AppReviewX you can send a new build to a small group of developers first, with concrete tasks, and read their findings before your users see the update.
