Google Play production access: how to apply after the test
After the closed test runs for the required time, the Play Console lets you apply for production access. The exact form changes over time, so use the official help page as the source of truth. At the time of writing the application asks about three areas: your closed test, your app and your readiness for production. Prepare answers for each before you open the form.
About your closed test
- How you recruited testers. Be specific: a developer community, a Google Group, people from your own network. Name the channel.
- How engaged they were. Give numbers from your notes: how many opted in, how many sent feedback, how often they used the app.
- What you learned. Summarize the most important findings in a few sentences.
About your app
- Who it is for and what problem it solves, in plain words.
- What you expect in the first months, such as number of users and how you will reach them. Be honest and modest.
Production readiness
- What you changed because of the test. List two or three real fixes, with the build or date. This is the strongest evidence that the test was real.
- What is still open and how you will handle crashes and feedback after launch.
Keep a testing log
Write down dates, testers (anonymized if you like), findings and fixes while the test runs. Writing the application from a log takes minutes, and writing it from memory leads to vague answers.
If the application is rejected
Read the reason, fix the real problem (for example too little testing activity), extend the test and apply again. Do not recruit people only to click through the app.
