Android large font and display size test

Test layouts with the largest font and display size settings and fix clipped text and overlapping buttons.

In this guide

Many people raise the font size or the display size on their phone. If your layout assumes the default, text gets clipped and buttons overlap. This test takes about ten minutes and finds most of it.

Set it up

Menu names vary by manufacturer. On most devices:

  1. Open Settings > Display > Font size (sometimes Font size and style) and move the slider to the maximum.
  2. Open Settings > Display > Display size (sometimes Screen zoom) and move it to the maximum.
  3. If the device offers Bold text, test with it on as well.
  4. Return to your app. Restart it so every screen starts fresh.

Test three combinations: largest font only, largest display size only, both together. Both together is the worst case.

Checklist

  1. Clipped text. Titles, button labels, tabs and list rows must not be cut off without a way to read them. Check: open every main screen and read each label in full.
  2. Overlapping elements. Text running into icons, buttons or each other. Check: look at toolbars, cards and rows with several items side by side.
  3. Buttons you cannot reach. A button pushed below the fold on a screen that does not scroll. Check: try to complete each flow to the end, including the last confirm button.
  4. Fixed-height containers. Rows or cards with a set height clip taller text. Check: look for single lines that were meant to wrap.
  5. Forms and the keyboard. The input field and its error text must stay visible with the keyboard open. Check: fill a form with large text.
  6. Dialogs. Long text and button rows in alert dialogs often overflow. Check: trigger every dialog.
  7. Navigation. Bottom tabs with long labels, side menus, tab bars. Check: all items readable and tappable.
  8. Tap targets. Bigger text should not shrink the tappable area. Check: tap the smallest controls.
  9. Rotation. Large text in landscape leaves little vertical space. Check: rotate on the forms and dialogs. See rotation and configuration changes.
  10. Switching live. Change the font size while the app is open and return. It should recreate cleanly and keep its place.

How to fix what you find

  • Size text in scalable units and let rows grow with content instead of fixing their height.
  • Allow wrapping or a second line where a label can be long.
  • Make screens that can overflow scrollable.
  • Re-test with the same settings after each fix.

Who should test

Ask testers who already use large text to run your key flows. They know what normal looks like for them. Ask for a screenshot of any broken screen and the font and display settings used.

Limits

This is a layout check, not a full accessibility review. For screen reader use, see the 10-minute screen reader test. Settings names differ by manufacturer; note the device model with every report.
