In this guide
A tester joined the test but the Play Store shows no app, or no install button. Most causes are on the account or setup side. Here is a list you can work through, and a message to send.
Checks for you (the developer)
- Is the tester really on the list or group? Compare the exact address with what you saved.
- Group first. With a Google Group, "users must join the group before opting in" (Google's help page).
- Is the release live on that track? After first publication the test link can take several hours to reach testers, per Google. See how long until testers can install.
- Is the tester also in an internal test? Google states that a user opted into internal testing is not eligible for open or closed testing until they opt out of the internal test.
- Paid app? Closed testers must purchase paid apps, per Google. See paid apps.
- Device rules. If you restricted devices or the app supports only some Android versions, a tester's phone may be excluded. Check your device catalog settings. (Practical advice, not a quoted rule.)
Checks for the tester
- Use the same Google account on the phone and in the opt-in link.
- Open the opt-in link again and confirm that it says you are a tester.
- Open the Play Store, search for the exact app name, or follow the link from the join page.
- Wait a little and refresh, then try again. Google says an app a tester has already installed updates to the test version "within a few minutes".
- Check that the phone is Android and not an emulator without Play Store.
Message you can send
Hi! If you cannot find the app: 1) check which Google account is active in the Play Store (profile picture, top right). 2) Open my test link again with that account. 3) Search for the app name in the Play Store. 4) If still nothing, send me a screenshot and your phone model.
