Indie app launch mistakes and how to avoid them

Ten mistakes seen in launch checklists: untested updates, no support plan, unclear value.

In this guide

These ten mistakes come up again and again in launch checklists. They are not statistics, and no story here is real; each is a pattern to check yourself against. For each one: what goes wrong and what to do.

1. Unclear value

Problem: A new visitor cannot say in one sentence what the app does and for whom. Fix: Write that sentence first. Put it in the title, subtitle and first screenshot. Ask three outsiders to repeat it back.

2. Launching untested

Problem: Crashes on devices you do not own, a broken first launch, a login that fails. Fix: Test on several real devices, with no network, and on a clean install. Get outside testers. Ask for private, structured feedback.

3. Untested updates

Problem: The first update after launch breaks something that worked, often data migration or login. Fix: Test every update on an install of the previous version, with real data. Keep a short regression list.

4. No support plan

Problem: Users write and nobody answers; bugs arrive in store reviews. Fix: Give a support email in the app and listing. Decide who answers, how fast you aim to, and where you log reports. Reply to store reviews politely.

5. A weak store listing

Problem: Default screenshots, no keywords, no thought about the first two lines. Fix: Work through the ASO guide, title and subtitle, keywords, icon and screenshots. Pick keywords by a method, not by guesses.

6. Ignoring store policies

Problem: Rejection or removal for missing privacy information, misleading metadata or an unlisted SDK. Fix: Read App Store Review Guidelines basics and Google Play policy basics before you submit. Fill in the privacy forms from an inventory.

7. Buying or swapping reviews

Problem: Paid, incentivized or swapped ratings look like a shortcut. Google Play's ratings policy prohibits offering rewards or incentives for ratings or reviews, and Apple's App Review Guidelines name paid, incentivized, filtered or fake feedback. Fix: Don't. Collect private feedback before launch, fix what it shows, and ask real users at good moments. Read buy app reviews.

8. No way to measure

Problem: After launch you cannot tell where users drop off. Fix: Define the activation event and basic funnel before launch. See retention in the first seven days. Keep analytics consistent with your privacy answers.

9. A launch day with nothing planned

Problem: The app is live, you refresh the console, and nobody knows. Fix: Prepare a simple plan: where you will announce, whom you will tell, who you will thank, and what you will fix first. No budget needed for a start; set realistic expectations.

10. Treating launch as the finish

Problem: No plan for week two, no one to learn from. Fix: Schedule a weekly review of feedback, crash reports and one improvement. Keep a small roadmap and tell early testers what changed.
