Beta announcement template

A short announcement to recruit testers in communities and mailing lists.

In this guide

A good beta call is short, honest and easy to answer. It says what the app is, what you need from people, how long it takes and what they get back. Post it only where self-promotion is allowed, and read that community's rules first.

Example (invented)

Looking for 5 testers for Pocket Budget (Android)

Hi all, I'm Sam and I'm building Pocket Budget, a simple expense tracker for people who
dislike spreadsheets. It's in beta and I'd like honest feedback before release.

What I'm asking: about 15 minutes, once. Add three expenses, edit one, export a CSV.
Tell me what confused you or broke.
What you need: an Android phone, Android 10 or newer.
How to join: [link]
What you get: early access, and I'm glad to test your app in return.
Deadline: 31 October.

How to adapt it

  • Read the rules of the place you post. Some communities forbid recruiting posts, others want a specific thread or flair. If in doubt, ask a moderator.
  • Do not ask for store ratings or reviews, and do not offer anything for them. Ask for feedback, not stars.
  • Be exact about time and tasks. "Test my app" gets fewer answers than "15 minutes, three tasks".
  • Say what the app collects. One honest line builds trust. This is not legal advice; follow the privacy rules that apply to you.
  • For Google Play closed tests: at the time of checking, Play Console Help says personal developer accounts created after November 13, 2023 need at least 12 testers opted in continuously for the preceding 14 days. Check the current official page for your account rather than relying on this template.
  • Adjust tone for a mailing list (more formal) versus a chat group (shorter).
