5 questions to ask testers about your onboarding
Most users decide in the first minutes whether your app is worth keeping. You cannot see that moment yourself, because you know too much. Ask testers these five questions right after their first session.
The questions
- Where did you hesitate? Hesitation shows up before confusion does. Ask for the screen and what they were thinking.
- What did you expect to happen after sign-up? The gap between expectation and reality is your onboarding bug.
- Which step felt unnecessary? Every field and permission prompt must earn its place.
- What would you have skipped if you could? This finds the optional steps that should be optional.
- Could you explain in one sentence what the app does? If they cannot, your first screens do not say it.
How to get honest answers
Ask for the answer in writing, with the device and the app version. Short, specific answers are worth more than a long review. Do not defend the design in your reply; thank them and write the finding down.
What to do with the answers
Group them by screen. When three testers hesitate at the same place, change that screen first, ship it and ask a different group to walk through again.
