You uploaded a build, added external testers, and nothing happens. That is normal for the first build of a group. Apple's TestFlight page says: "When you add the first build of your app to a group, the build gets sent to App Review to make sure it follows the App Review Guidelines." And: "A review is required only for the first build. Subsequent builds may not require a full review." Testing can begin once the build is approved (retrieved 2026-10-24).
The page does not give a review time. Do not promise testers a date.
What it means for your plan
- Internal testers are a separate group. Internal testers are App Store Connect users (up to 100). Apple describes the review for external testers, so use internal testers for the first checks while the external review runs.
- External testers wait. Up to 10,000 external testers are possible, but none gets the first build before it is approved.
- Later builds may not need a full review, so the wait is mostly a one-time cost.
Preparation checklist
The list below is practical advice, not Apple's official checklist; Apple's "Provide test information" page marks only the Beta App Description as required and describes the Feedback Email field. Check the current App Review Guidelines for the rest. Treat it like a small App Store review. The build goes against the App Review Guidelines, so common rejection reasons apply. See App Store rejection reasons: a test checklist.
- The app launches and the main flow works without a crash.
- If login is needed, give reviewers a working demo account or a way in.
- Fill in the test information in App Store Connect: a Beta App Description (required) and a Feedback Email.
- No placeholder content, broken links or "coming soon" screens.
- Required privacy information and permission texts are in place.
- Anything that needs hardware, a region or a backend is explained, and the backend is running.
- Your contact details are current, in case the reviewer needs to ask.
While you wait
- Upload early. Do not schedule a tester kickoff on the same day.
- Tell testers there is a short wait and when you will write again.
- Run the same build with internal testers.
- If the build is rejected, read the reason, fix, upload a new build number and resubmit.
