How long should an app test take?

Realistic time per task and how to tell when you have tested enough.

In this guide

There is no single right length. A small tool with one screen needs less time than an app with accounts, settings and several flows. These are rules of thumb, not requirements.

Rough time per task

Example ranges for planning, not measured values:

Task Typical time
First run: install, open, understand what it is 5 minutes
Main task, start to finish 10 to 15 minutes
Edge cases: empty input, long text, going back 5 to 10 minutes
Interruptions: switching apps, no connection 3 to 5 minutes
Writing the feedback 5 to 15 minutes

Add time for apps with sign-up, many settings or several user roles. The 30-minute routine is one way to use that time.

Writing takes time too

Many testers count only the time with the app. Writing a report someone can follow takes time as well, and it is where the value is. Write while you test, so you do not spend an extra half hour trying to remember.

How to tell you have tested enough

You can stop when:

  • You have done the main task from start to finish, at least once without help.
  • You have tried the unusual cases you could think of: empty, long, interrupted.
  • New attempts stop turning up new problems.
  • You can say what you did not test.

Signs you stopped too early

  • You only tried the happy path.
  • You cannot describe the steps of your top finding.
  • You have one big vague note instead of separate entries.

Signs you are going too long

  • You are repeating the same flow looking for something.
  • You are testing parts the developer did not ask about, and your notes are growing without clear findings.
  • You are tired and your notes are getting worse.

A short, clear piece of feedback is worth more than a long, tired one. See what makes feedback useful.

On AppReviewX

Your feedback is private and structured; 1 feedback = 1 credit. A credit reflects a written feedback, not minutes spent, so do not stretch a test to look thorough. Test what the app needs and report clearly. Store ratings are voluntary, unpaid and never required.
