Describe UI problems so developers understand

Words and screenshots that locate a problem on the screen exactly.

In this guide

"The screen looks wrong" gives a developer nothing to work with. A UI report works when the developer can find the exact place on the exact screen and see what you see.

Say where

Name the screen first, then the spot.

  • Screen: the title or the path to it. "Settings > Account", not "the settings".
  • Position: top bar, bottom navigation, first list item, floating button, keyboard area.
  • Element: use the label on it. "The button labelled 'Continue'", not "the green thing".

Use the right word for the problem

You see Say
Text is cut off "Text is truncated" and say which text
Things overlap "X overlaps Y"
Content hidden behind the keyboard or the notch "X is covered by the keyboard / status bar"
Something does not react "Tapping X does nothing" (and how often)
Wrong size or spacing "X is much smaller than Y beside it"
Content jumps while loading "The layout shifts when the image loads"
Colors hard to read "Grey text on white, hard to read"

Say what you expected

One line: "I expected the button to be fully visible." That separates a bug from a taste difference.

Give the conditions

Layout problems often depend on the situation. Note:

  • device and OS version
  • portrait or landscape
  • large text or display zoom turned on
  • dark or light mode
  • steps to reach the screen

If it happens only sometimes, say so.

Add a screenshot

A screenshot shows the problem; your words say what to look at. Mark the spot. See Screenshot tips for testers.

Example

Example report:

Checkout > Address form, portrait, large text on. The 'Continue' button is covered by the keyboard and I cannot scroll to it. Expected: the button stays reachable. Device and OS: see below. Screenshot attached.

Keep it private and fair

Feedback on AppReviewX is private and structured. Describe the screen, not the developer. Your report is judged on how useful it is, and no store rating is part of it.
