Screenshot captions: 25 benefit-first examples

Rewrite feature names into outcomes, with before and after examples.

In this guide

A caption has a few words and one job: tell a stranger what they get. Most weak captions name a feature ("Dashboard", "Settings", "Reports"). Strong ones name the result. For the planning around captions, see screenshots that convert; this page is the example list.

The rewrite method

  1. Write the feature name.
  2. Ask: "So that the user can ...?" Finish the sentence.
  3. Cut it to the shortest version that still makes sense without the picture.
  4. Check the first words. They should be the outcome or a verb.

25 before and after examples

All examples are fictional apps and illustrate the method. None is a tested caption.

Patterns that repeat

  • Outcome before feature: "Never miss a task again" rather than "Reminders".
  • A verb up front: Scan, Plan, Track, Share.
  • Concrete over vague: "in minutes" or "at a glance" beat "easy" and "powerful".
  • One idea per screenshot. Two ideas make a caption long and a picture busy.
  • Numbers only when true. Do not invent counts.

Mistakes

  • Captions that repeat the app name on every screenshot.
  • Long sentences that need three lines in a small view.
  • Claims such as "best" or "No. 1" without proof.
  • Captions in one language on a localized listing (see localizing your listing).

Test them

Show the screenshot row to someone for five seconds with no explanation. Ask what the app does. Change the caption that confuses them. For measured comparisons, see A/B testing your store listing.
