In this guide
A test build is an app that has not had the wear of real use. It may have bugs that expose data, ask for more than it needs, or send things somewhere unexpected. You can test and still protect yourself. This is general advice, not legal or data-protection advice.
Before you install
- Know who sent it. Install only from a developer you can identify, through the route the store or the platform provides. Be careful with files sent by strangers.
- Check what it is for. If the app's stated purpose and its requests do not match, ask first.
- Use a separate setup if you can. An old or secondary phone, or a separate profile, keeps your main data out of reach.
What to share
- Your phone model, system version and what you did. This is what a report needs.
- A screenshot, after you have checked it.
What to avoid
- Real personal data in test fields. Use made-up names, addresses and numbers.
- Your main passwords. Do not reuse a password you use elsewhere. If the app needs an account, create a throwaway one.
- Payment details. Do not enter real card details in a test build.
- Other people's data. Do not import real contacts or photos of other people.
- Screenshots that show private content. Notifications, messages, email addresses and tokens can sit in a corner of the screen. Crop or blur them first.
Protect your accounts
- Use a unique password for any account you create during a test.
- Turn on two-step login on your important accounts.
- If the app asks you to sign in with an existing account, think about whether a test build deserves that access.
- After testing, delete test accounts and uninstall the app if you do not need it.
If something looks wrong
If the app asks for data it does not need, behaves strangely with your information or you think it is not what it claims to be, stop using it and tell the owner. On AppReviewX your feedback is private, so you can raise it without a public post. See permissions in beta apps.
Checklist
- [ ] I know who made the app
- [ ] I use made-up data
- [ ] I use a password I use nowhere else
- [ ] I have not entered real payment details
- [ ] I have checked screenshots for private content
- [ ] I have deleted test accounts after testing
What AppReviewX asks of you
Feedback is private and structured; 1 feedback = 1 credit. Store ratings are voluntary, unpaid and never required, so you never need to link a test to a public profile.
