Do testers need a Google account? Accounts that work

A Google Account or Workspace account is required. How to invite people without Gmail.

In this guide

Short answer: yes. Google's help page for testing says: "Users need a Google Account or a Google Workspace account to join a test." A tester without either cannot join.

What the rule says, and what it doesn't

The page names two account types: a Google Account and a Google Workspace account. It does not say the address has to end in @gmail.com. Your tester list in Play Console works with the email addresses of the accounts people use on their Android device.

If a tester has no Gmail address

Three common situations:

  • They use a work or school account. If it is a Google Workspace account, it is covered by the rule above. Whether it works for your test can still depend on what the organisation's admin allows on the device, so ask the tester to try the invite link early.
  • They have an email address from another provider. Google's account help says you can use a non-Gmail email address to create a Google Account instead of a Gmail one.
  • They have no Google account at all. They have to create one before they can join. Allow time for this.

Practical checks before you invite

  1. Ask each tester for the exact email of the account that is signed in to Google Play on their phone.
  2. Add that address to your tester list or Google Group, not an alias or a second address.
  3. Send the opt-in link and ask them to confirm they see the app in the Play Store.
  4. Keep a short list: name or handle, account type, date opted in.

A wrong address is the usual reason an invite "does not show up". If that is your problem, check the account on the device first.

Why it matters for the 12-tester requirement

Google requires testers to stay opted in continuously for 14 days before you can apply for production access (see what to do during the 14 days). A tester who cannot sign in properly counts for nothing, so sort out accounts on day 1, not day 10.

With AppReviewX

AppReviewX test rounds for Google Play are built for this requirement: 12 testers, 14 days in a row, for Android apps. New accounts start with 0 credits, and 1 feedback you write earns 1 credit. Feedback stays private; nothing is exchanged for store reviews.
