An email list is the simplest way to tell Google Play who may join your closed test. You create it once and can reuse it.
What a list can hold
Per Google's help page: up to 200 lists, each with up to 2,000 users. One track can use up to 50 lists. You can reuse a list for future tests on any of your apps.
Steps
- In the Play Console open Test and release > Testing > Closed testing, click "Manage track" and select the "Testers" tab.
- Click "Create email list" and name the list, for example "Round 1 testers" (a naming example).
- Add addresses separated by commas, or click "Upload CSV file".
- Click "Save changes", then "Create". Check that the list is selected for the track before you send the link.
Format your addresses
Each tester needs the email of a Google account. Good practice:
- One address per entry, no names, no extra text.
- Lowercase, no trailing spaces.
- Remove duplicates and typos before you upload.
Example of a clean CSV (example data):
anna@example.com
ben@example.com
chris@example.com
Careful with CSV uploads
Google states: "Uploading a CSV file overwrites any email addresses you previously added." If you want to add people later, re-upload the full list, not only the new names. Google also states that Play Console does not accept CSV files in UTF-8 with BOM format; if an upload fails, save the file as plain UTF-8.
Common mistakes
- Using an address that is not tied to a Google account. See Do testers need a Google account?.
- Creating the list but not checking that it is selected for the track.
- Mixing up list and Google Group. Compare them in Google Group or email list?.
