Google Group or email list for closed test testers?

When a group is easier than a list, how members join and what testers must do first.

In this guide

Google Play lets you define closed testers in two ways: an email list or a Google Group. Both work. The choice decides how much work you have later.

Comparison

Criterion Email list Google Group
Where you manage people In the Play Console In Google Groups
Adding a person Edit list, save, check the track Person joins the group
Extra step for testers None before the opt-in link Must join the group before opting in
Format One address per entry, CSV possible Group address like yourgroupname@googlegroups.com
Overwrite risk A CSV upload overwrites earlier addresses Not applicable
Reuse List can be reused across your apps Group can be assigned to tests

Facts in this table come from Google's help page (retrieved 2026-10-23): for groups, "Only members of the specified Google Groups can join your test", and with a Google Group users must join the group before opting in. The "Reuse" cell for groups is our reading; check the current page.

Pick an email list if

  • You have a fixed set of testers and know their addresses.
  • You want everything in one place, the Console.
  • Testers should only need one step: open the link.

Pick a Google Group if

  • People join over time and you do not want to edit the Console each time.
  • You want testers to sign themselves up with a join link.
  • You run several tests and want one place to manage the people.

The rule people miss

With a group, joining the group comes first, opting in comes second. If a tester opens the opt-in link before they are a member, they will not get in. When someone reports that, see link not showing and tester cannot find the app.

A simple rule of thumb

Small, known circle: list. Open, changing circle: group. You can switch later; just tell your testers when the link or the steps change.

Need testers?
