How to add testers to a Google Play closed test

Step by step: create a tester list, add the list to the track and send the opt-in link.

In this guide

Testers can only install your closed-test build if you add them to the track first. This guide shows the order of steps and the limits that apply. Menu names below follow Google's help page as retrieved on the date given; the Play Console can change them, so check the linked page if a label differs.

Before you start

  • Your app needs a release on a closed testing track.
  • You need the Google account email of every tester. Collect them in a plain list.
  • Decide between an email list and a Google Group. See Google Group or email list?.

Steps

  1. Open the closed testing page of your app in the Play Console (Test and release > Testing > Closed testing), click "Manage track" and select the "Testers" tab.
  2. Create a tester list. Under Testers click "Create email list", give it a name you will recognise later and add the email addresses (or upload a CSV file). Click "Save changes", then "Create". Details: create an email list.
  3. Check that the list is selected for the track. If testers cannot join later, look here first.
  4. Make sure the app status is Published. According to Google, the opt-in link "displays only when an app status is 'Published'".
  5. Copy the opt-in link from the track and send it to your testers. What testers do with it: the opt-in link.

Limits to know

Google's help page states that you can create up to 200 lists and each list can contain up to 2,000 users. A track can use up to 50 lists. Lists can be reused: "You can use the same list for future tests on any of your apps." Uploading a CSV file overwrites any addresses you added before, so keep your master list somewhere safe.
